These two designs are preliminary studies for the decorative arches that appear stage right and stage left of the main set in Piper's celebrated designs for a production of Mozart's Don Giovanni that was produced at Glyndebourne in 1951. A related design for the same set with the present arches integrated into the main scheme is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (acc.S1775-1986). The second design in the present pair is illustrated below.
