Paul Nash

1889-1946

An Oyster Ascending the Stairs

Ref: 1356

Executed on the reverse of a postcard addressed to the artist Edward Burra with a postmark of 18th February 1929 (see below)

Extensively inscribed with a note from the artist and monongrammed: PN

Pen and black ink, 9 by 11.5 cm

Provenance: Edward Burra

By the late 1920s Nash had become close friends with his fellow artist Edward Burra, one that had been strengthened by Nash living on the south coast at Dymchurch, not far from Burra at Rye. The present sketch is strong evidence of Nash's sense of the absurd and was swiftly executed at the end of this brief postcard to Burra.
