Portrait study of Queen Charlotte

Ref: 1598

Inscribed with title l.l.: The Queen Sketched at Windsor and with further inscription l.r. Queen Charlotte/wife of Georg III

Pen with light grey ink over traces of pencil, 17 by 9.5 cm

Provenance: from an album of the artist's portrait studies; with Chantry Fine Art

Scott trained at the Royal Academy Schools where he was a pupil of Bartolozzi. He became well-known as an engraver and portrait painter and was engraver to the Duke of York and (subsequently) a painter to the Prince of Wales. The present work comes from an album of the artist's work from c.1780 consisting of mainly Royal portrait studies including of Queen Caroline and her children. Many were sketched at Windsor and are apparently annotated in the artist's own hand.
