"September 38" - Design for a Chapter Heading

Ref: 1665

With signature (verso): Keith Henderson

Gouache, 7 by 19 cm

Henderson worked as an artist for the RAF during World War Two and he is known for his powerful and graphic depictions of War in the air. This chapter heading may refer to Sqaudron 38 (not the date 1938 as is most immediately apparent). Founded in 1916, this was one of the War's most famous sqaudrons of bombers, the type of aircraft depicted in this image.
