Weguelin was a highly successful painter and illustrator of the late ninenteenth century Neo-Classical style associated with Edward Poynter and J.W.Waterhouse. In 1893 he illustrated a book of Hans Christian Andersen's stories The Little Mermaid and Other Tales in an edition published by Lawrence and Bullen. The present work, a tailpiece for the book, is painted in the finely executed style of monochrome watercolour associated with Edwardian book illustration.
