Oil on board

This picture belongs to a small series of works that Rowntree painted in the Scottish Highlands in 1984. Another work - Summer in the Highlands - recently sold at Bonhams, and likewise places its compositional emphasis on the dramatic mountain ranges of Scotland. This painting, however, takes its subject even more literally by including the Flag of Scotland (with the Saltire humourously mirrored in the clouds).
