Provenance: from a sketchbook belonging to the artist's friend Gordon Bennett (a gift to him from the artist's widow, Kathleen)

Gordon and Catherine Bennett were friends of Sutherland towards the end of the artist's life. The watercolour Tree at Picton Ferry, Wales from 1977 (see Bonhams, Twentieth Century British Art, 9 March 2011, lot 49) is personally dedicated to the Bennetts by the artist.
