Roger Fry and his lover Helen Anrep bought Rodwell House, near the village of Baylham just north of Ipswich in 1928. Baylham Mill was nearby on the River Gipping and was painted by a number of artists as well as Fry himself (most notably by Duncan Grant on a visit to Fry and Anrep in 1930 (sold Christie’s, 29 September 2020, lot 179)) as well as several of the Euston Road Group of artists, including Graham Bell, Claude Rogers and William Coldstream, all whilst guests of Helen Anrep during the 1930s.
