The series of watercolour landscapes taken by Nash at the Western edge of the Cotswolds in the Winter of 1944-45 are often known collectively as the "Landscapes of the Vale". The Nash scholar Margot Eates has written of them: "they possess an extraordinary evocative, beauty, that depends for its magic upon the realisation of the seized moment. They cannot be described; they can only be felt". (Eates (op cit) p.81).
