Hills, a founder of the Old Watercolour Society, was one of the finest painters and etchers from nature of his age. His delicate studies in particular have an economy and sense of composition which at times seem to anticipate English landscape painting of the early twentieth century. More finished rural scenes became his most popular exhibits later in life.
