Joseph Edward Southall, RWS

1866-1944

Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire

Ref: 2566

Signed with monogram and dated l.r.: 31.iii.1917/JES

Pencil, 22 by 15 cm (8 ½ by 6 ins)

Southall regularly travelled to the area of the southwestern Cotswolds near Stroud. His close friend Charles March Gere lived in Painswick, whilst Henry Payne lived on the edge of Amberley only two miles or so from the market town of Minchinhampton. He may also have accompanied Arthur Gaskin on this trip as there are several views of the neighbouring village of Box painted by Gaskin and also dated 1917. This unusual, oblique view of the town was drawn before the demolition of the buildings to the right of this drawing to make way for the town’s Memorial Cross.
