Beaucastle was the home of Southall’s uncle, George Baker, the oldest brother of Eliza Maria Baker.  A successful industrialist and Liberal politician he, was a friend of John Ruskin, becoming second master of the Guild of St George after Ruskin’s death.  He acquired land at near Bewdley  and commissioned Richard Doubleday to design Beaucastle, a major Arts & Crafts country house.  Ruskin contributed to the designs which include four stained-glass windows by Burne-Jones.
