James Boswell

1906-1971

The Circus Has Arrived, 1946

Ref: 2697

Watercolour over ink, 35 by 50.5 cm (13 ¾ by 19 ¾ ins)

These essentially imaginary scenes are probably based (albeit only very partly) on the area of north London near Hampstead. Boswell’s use of watercolour highlights his Neo-Romantic qualities as an artist, with the kind of brooding skies and empty vistas that are seen in his middle eastern War work
