Sal Shuel writes about her father’s street scenes, some of the finest and most distinctive work he did in the decade from about 1938 to 1948: “James, who never liked the tube, used taxis, buses and trolleybuses. The 24 bus took him to Camden Town, Soho and Charing Cross Road, the 639 trolley bus to City Road and Moorgate and the 513 to Holborn Circus. All the drawings which filled his sketch books were on those routes, corridors through London which became familiar to him. If his buses didn't go there, neither did he.”
