Sir Stanley Spencer, RA

1891-1959

Portrait studies of men

Ref: 751

Inscribed twice u.r.: unconscionable

With a street scene (verso) probably in Cookham

Pencil, 30 by 26 cm

Provenance: the estate of Daphne Charlton

These strong figure studies are likely to be intended for the background of one of his major subject pictures. The pen and ink inscription is unlikely to relate to the picture, Spencer regularly using his drawing sheets to express his thoughts or ideas.
