Sir Stanley Spencer, RA

1891-1959

Studies of soldiers linking arms, probably for the Sandham Memorial Chapel

Ref: 755

Inscribed u.l.: here and there you would just see the arm:-thus

Pen and brown/black ink, 10 by 7 ins (25 by 17.5 cm)

Provenance: the estate of Daphne Charlton

This intriguing demonstration sheet may relate to the complex composition depicting the linking of soldiers’ arms to the lower left of the chapel’s monumental centerpiece The Resurrection of Soldiers (1928-29). It is know from other studies that Spencer struggled with this and other aspects of the composition and although this sheet does not relate directly to the final composition it may represent the artist’s early workings for the idea.
