Watercolour and gouache over pen and ink, 35 by 51 cm (13 ¾ by 20 ins)

Boswell had memorably depicted a football match (humorously under driving rain) in the lithograph The Winning Side which was issued as a School Print for the Festival of Britain in 1951. The present watercolour is altogether more stylised and reflective of the art of its decade – pointing towards the abstraction that would emerge in the art of his final decade.
