Bayes’s training under Sir George Frampton and Harry Bates made him one of the foremost exponents of the New Sculpture movement of his generation. As well as work for Royal Doulton and numerous architectural commissions including the colourful Queen of Time for the exterior of Selfridges and Drama Through the Ages for the Saville Theatre (now the Odeon, Covent Garden) he was also a fine creator of sculptor on a more intimate scale. The present work, which recalls similar reliefs by his teacher Bates, is also typical of the sculptural decoration he created for Arts and Crafts and Aesthetic Movement furniture at the same date.
