A design for a fan

Sheringham’s beautiful designs for theatre, murals and fans epitomise the best of the British Art Nouveau. Perhaps best known as a designer and illustrator, particularly for Gilbert and Sullivan operettas at the D’Oyly Carte company, he was also a pupil of Charles Conder, another great designer of fans. Conder’s influence combined with Sheringham’s own highly individual creative touch is strongly in evidence in the present work.
