Rebecca John has discovered a study of the same sitter by John in the artist’s drawings and papers held by the Slade School of Art Collection at University College London. That drawing confirms her as an as yet identified sitter from this period. The present work was previously believed to have been a portrait of John’s great muse Dorelia, but as well as differing in appearance, John did not meet Dorelia until 1903, well after the likely date of this drawing.
