The 1930s was one of Bawden’s busiest decades for commercial art, with work for organisations including Good Food magazine, London Transport and Shell Mex. He had a particular talent for the ingenious placing of text within a design as evidenced in this drawing for a magazine advertisement for Shell (see fig.1 below).
