Provenance: the artist’s cousin Isabel Harlock and thence by descent

 

Elizabeth Pepper became manager of Langdale Line Industry in the late 1880s.  The industry was set up in Westmoreland, Cumbria by Alfred Fleming and supported by Ruskin.  It produced hand woven linen for a form of embroidery and cutwork known as Ruskin lace.  A craft practiced by Southall’s mother.
