Watts, one of a long line of talented Roman Catholic artist-craftsman, was notable for his fine direct-carving in English churches and cathedrals. This included work for Oban Cathedral in 1951, Bath Abbey between 1959–60 and Downside Abbey in 1974. He was associated with Bath in particular where he studied and where the Victoria Art Gallery gave him a retrospective in 1999. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1970. His moving, smaller scale devotional pieces like the present work are more rarely found in his oeuvre.
