Gwen John converted to catholicism in the early 1910s and rear views of the congregation of the church in Meudon (where she settled latterly) are the most recurring subject in her painting of the next two decades. John would sketch the congregation on-the-spot (often in tiny sketchbooks as here) later adding watercolour and bodycolour in the studio.
