Breton Women and Children, c.1910

Ref: 2653

Watercolour over pen and ink, 22.5 by 15.5cm

Provenance: Lady Ottoline Morrell, (1873-1938) Garsington Manor

Exhibited: Leicester Galleries, London, Pictures from Garsington Manor: the collection of Lady Ottoline Morrell, 1956

Lamb's lover, the celebrated Oxfordshire socialite Ottoline Morrell, was also a notable patron of his work. As well as owning this fine watercolour, she owned a panel painting Breton Youth, which Lamb had exhibited at the Camden Town Group in 1911. The sitters are women and children from the Favennac family, at whose house, Kersimon, Lamb had resided on his trips to Doelan in Brittany. The influence of Gauguin in these Breton pictures is unmistakable.
